From the beginning of the republic we have as a nation struggled to gain independence from other external countries and influences A radical political theorist, Thomas Paine, helped crystallize the argument for separation from England In a pamphlet called Common Sense, which sold 100,000 copies, he attacked the idea of a hereditary monarchy Paine presented two alternatives for America continued submission under a tyrannical king and outworn system of government, or liberty and happiness as a self-sufficient, independent republic
Now fast forward to today Take a look at the world we live in If you accept that we the American people are completely and hopelessly dependant on oil as President Bush said in his 2007 State of the Union speech where he said For too long our nation has been dependent on foreign oil And this dependence leaves us more vulnerable to hostile regimes, and to terrorists -- who could cause huge disruptions of oil shipments, and raise the price of oil, and do great harm to our economy
Those hostile regimes he speaks of could very well be monarchies in the Middle East So in the all the time since the United States of America has struggled, fought, and bleed to claim to be the shinning beacon of freedom what have we become? While the political allegiances that we have today may solidified in ways we will never publically see their presence in our lives is felt every day Once upon a time our ancestors fought a revolutionary war to gain independence The question I ask you, the reader, is what are you willing to do to be free?
